Copyright Basics

What Does "Cinematograph Film" Actually Cover?

Most Indian MSMEs assume this category is only for movies released in cinemas. Indian copyright law defines it far more broadly – any work of visual recording with accompanying sound qualifies.

🎬

Feature & Short Films

Traditional theatrical or independent films of any length.

📺

Web Series & OTT Originals

Streaming-native productions are fully covered under the same law.

📢

Corporate & Ad Films

Advertisements, brand films, and corporate videos qualify too.

🎥

Documentaries & Music Videos

Any completed visual recording with sound is eligible for registration.

The Single Most Important Fact

Who Owns the Copyright – You, or Your Writer and Composer?

This is the one thing every producer needs to understand before assuming registration alone settles ownership.

A useful, lesser-known detail: even after a composer or lyricist assigns their rights to you, a 2012 amendment gives them a non-waivable statutory right to equal royalty for certain non-theatrical uses of their work – worth knowing if you're negotiating these agreements.

Fee-Lock Guarantee + Transparency Note

The price you pay today is the price you pay. If an objection or discrepancy letter arises on this application, it's handled within your existing fee – no stage-wise add-on, ever. This guarantee covers your fee; it does not guarantee registration will be granted, as that decision rests with the Registry.

Why Register Your Film's Copyright Now?

  • Registration gives you prima facie evidence of ownership – valuable if your production is ever copied, pirated, or distributed without permission.
  • Distribution, streaming, and licensing partners often want documented proof of copyright before closing a deal.
  • Registration also enables the criminal-prosecution route against unauthorised distribution, not just a civil claim.
  • 60 years of protection from the year of publication secures your production's value for the long term.

Why One Complete Plan?

  • Most providers charge separately for documentation, filing, and objection responses.
  • Our Complete Plan is a single, transparent fee – no future surprises at any stage.
  • Every step is covered – documentation, filing, attorney-led procedure, and objection handling.
  • Managed end-to-end by our process team, together with the attorney you authorise.
Value Comparison

The Real Cost: Why Our Price Is Better

Our pricing is simple and honest. Our one-time, all-inclusive fee is the only fee you will ever pay for every step in the package.

The Low-Fee Lure

Most online providers lure buyers with a low entry fee, but once objections, responses, and mandatory procedure steps are added, the total cost often climbs well beyond the advertised price in the majority of cases.

Initial payment plans often leave out attorney-led case management, forcing you to pay extra, step by step, for essential legal procedures ahead.

Our Complete Plan

A single, transparent ₹18,900 one-time payment – no hidden charges, no future surprises.

Your registration is managed end-to-end by our expert process management team together with the attorney you authorise, at a transparent price that is often lower than what others ultimately charge.

Is This Right For You?

Who This Plan Is For

We'd rather you buy this with a clear head than assume it's for everyone.

This Plan Is Right For You If:
  • You're the producer of a completed film, video, web series, or ad production
  • You plan to license, distribute, or sell distribution rights and want documented ownership
  • You want a defensible position against unauthorised copying or piracy
  • You want an attorney-led process handling any objections, rather than a DIY filing
You May Not Need This If:
  • You're the scriptwriter or composer wanting to protect your own underlying work – see our Copyright for Literary Work or Copyright for Sound Recording plans instead
  • Production isn't finished yet – registration needs the actual completed visual recording, not just a script or concept
  • You need to secure rights from your writers or composers first – see our IP Licensing & Royalty Agreement or Ownership Transfer Deed plans for that

How It Works

Your Registration Journey in 4 Stages

Every stage is tracked on the platform, with your authorised IP attorney acting upon your written authorisation, from documentation through to your registration certificate.

1

Stage 1: Documentation & Synopsis Preparation

We help you compile your production's documentation and synopsis – the details the Registry requires to process your application.

2

Stage 2: Application Filing (Form XIV)

Once your documentation is ready, your authorised IP attorney prepares and files your copyright application with the Registrar of Copyrights, upon your written authorisation, and you receive filing confirmation.

3

Stage 3: Examination & Objection Handling

The Registrar examines your application. Your authorised IP attorney handles any discrepancy letters or objections upon your written authorisation, and our platform team coordinates with them on all Registry communication.

Objection Handling – if raised
4

Stage 4: Registration Certificate

Once the Registrar is satisfied, your copyright is registered and your certificate issued, with status updates throughout.

This is not merely a filing service – every stage above, including objection handling where required, is managed on your behalf as part of the same one-time fee.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does "cinematograph film" only mean movies shown in cinemas?
No. Indian copyright law defines it broadly and technology-neutrally – any work of visual recording with accompanying sound. This covers web series, OTT originals, documentaries, corporate and ad films, and music videos, not just theatrical releases.
If I register my film's copyright, do I automatically own the script and music too?
No. As producer, you're the first owner of the film as a whole, but Section 13(4) of the Copyright Act keeps the underlying works – script, music, lyrics – separately owned by their original authors unless they've been validly assigned to you in writing. Registering the film doesn't transfer those rights automatically.
How long does copyright protection last for a film?
60 years from the calendar year following the year the film is first made available to the public – a long-term protection window for your production's commercial value.
Is the fee different for MSME and Non-MSME applicants?
No. Our fee for this service is identical for every applicant – copyright registration fees don't carry an entity-based concession the way trademark, design, or patent fees do.
What does the Fee-Lock Guarantee + Transparency Note actually cover?
It means the ₹18,900 you pay today is final for this application – if an objection or discrepancy letter arises during the process, it's handled within your existing fee, with no stage-wise add-on charge. This guarantee covers your fee; it does not guarantee that registration will be granted, since that decision rests with the Registry.
Does this plan include a TROM dashboard or login account?
No. TROM dashboard features are part of our separate Trademark Registration & Online Management plan. Your application is tracked through direct support channels and status updates from our platform team.
Who represents me if an objection is raised?
ipronline.com is a technology platform and does not provide legal representation. Objection handling and official responses are undertaken by an authorised IP attorney upon your written authorisation.
Is ipronline.com a law firm?
No. ipronline.com is a technology platform providing process management, documentation and workflow tools in accordance with Indian IP procedures. When legal representation is needed, you independently engage authorised IP attorneys.
